The term Nan-kuan is used in Taiwan to designate the school of music came from the Amoy/Chuanchou area of southern mainland China, in contrast to Pei-kuan (nothern-school or-instruments) which came from northern China. Nan-kuan has been popular in the Fukien-Taiwan area throughout many periods, and was called differently according to the variety of musical characteristics and instruments used in each period. The name changed from"shih-chu" (strings & bamboos) in the earlier stage to"hsien-kuan"(strings & pipes),"wu-yin" (five instruments),"lang-ch'uen-yueh" (King Meng-Chan's music) and"lang-ch'uen-ch'ang" (king Meng-Chan's songs) etc. In Fukien and South-eastern Asia, it is usually called"hsuen-kuan" (strings & pipes), and in Taiwan, specifically"nangkuan" (southern-pipes, instruments,-school).
